Zack Sumner Schomp

Valentine Avenue

You know this house, at least on an emotional level. The corner lot you frequently pass by happens to warrant a glance for reasons you can’t quite articulate. In Valentine Avenue, photographer Zack Sumner Schomp has captured a series of images that allow you to sit with this place. Part typology and part time-lapse- but also lacking the intentionality typically ascribed to either of these approaches in photography- this series presents a chance to experience a set of snapshots: each of the same structure, at various times of day, and taken during an arbitrary and undefined timeframe. Rather than elevate the house on Valentine Avenue to the level of monument, Schomp embraces the everyday-ness of his subject, offering a chance to comb over the details and take pleasure in the little changes in each image. As Schomp has said in the afterword of his photo book for Valentine Avenue, “I never thought about it as a project to begin with, just sort of a routine - I never went to the location specifically to make a photograph until the very end. They were always made in passing.”
