A New Kind of Space for Artists and Art ENTHUSIASTs

Each show at The Burb incorporated our hybrid physical/digital exhibition design- wherein the art was installed physically in the space for virtual exhibitions to be viewed online- conceived largely in response to the pandemic.  Founded in the summer of 2020 by two MFA post-grads looking for an exhibition space free from commercial pressures, the Burb encouraged our artists to focus on what they are passionate about.  Burb Contemporary’s context within a middle-class suburb with an enduring history of red-lining also offered a wellspring of content for site specific performances and installations. In addition to an exhibition, Burb artists were invited to share their thoughts on their work and process through THE BLURB, our official podcast.

Who started the burb?

Fellow Mills College, Oakland MFA alumni, Rebekah Wilson Smith (MFA 2019) and Alex Rambler (MFA 2018) are two Sacramento based artists with diverging practices but a mutual love for all things art. Smith works primarily in soft sculpture and oil painting, while Rambler is a photographic sculptor and projectionist. Their work can be found at rebekahwilsonsmith.com and alexrambler.com.
