Magical Thinking
Feeling down? Not as productive or vigorous as you used to be? Traumatized by recent world events? Muzi Li Rowe’s newest body of work, Magical Thinking, has a cure for what ails you. Rowe has skillfully crafted a series of mystical power objects made of resin, glitter, batteries, and computer and smartphone remnants. Known as “orgonites” within certain New Age circles, and typically filled with crystals and other elements thought to have metaphysical properties, Rowe’s orgonites aren’t exactly designed to empower you with the potentiality of the universe. Rather, these e-waste filled blocks and pyramids are a sharp critique of technosolutionism and the commodification of spirituality in wellness culture. Indeed, they show how much this brand of spirituality and the fetishization of tech have in common. Accompanying these works is a series of rainbow hued, Instagram friendly affirmation statements backed in mirror glass. From afar they look like sparkling ransom notes- each word spelled out with the extracted keys from various technological devices. Like the e-waste these works contain, the message is positively toxic.
