Meeting another’s gaze is an act of acknowledgment. A longing gaze lingers with affection. An inward gaze can be painful, but bear life changing revelations. All speak to a form of connection made through the heart. In Brandi Fox’s Her Gaze, this theme is tied inextricably to the feminine- a concept the artist fully embraces as a means to empowerment. Soft bodies, gentle caresses, and the enchanting beauty of the natural world are demonstrated, through photographic portraiture, to hold deep and courageous strength. In her highly collaborative practice, Brandi works with her subjects- including frequent collaborator, artist Deziree Boeldt- to illuminate feminine bonds of love and friendship. She eschews the objectification often found in photographic portraiture, producing instead a way of seeing that invites empathy and compassion.
